It is necessary to have a wallet to use, hold, or trade the $Toast crypto that you will buy. There are many types of wallets to chose from and many resources where you can learn more here and here. You will need an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible wallet, often also referred to as a multi-chain wallet.

Potential options include, but are not limited to, Metamask, Coinbase, First, or Rabby.

This is actually creating your wallet, receiving your public and private keys, and, if appropriate, linking it to your web browser.

This is multiple sub-steps. You will need to buy ETH, using your local currency, and then move that ETH from the main Ethereum network to the Base network. This is what is known as 'swapping' and will result in wETH ("wrapped ETH"). This wETH can now be used to buy $Toast.
